Wine.. good or bad for you, what's the story?

How many foods which benefits have been debated in recent history have a god for a representative? And not just one, but a few! The history of the grape vine agriculture goes back 7000 years. Wine making and consumption can be traced through out most cultures, religious scriptures, rituals, celebrations as well as customary companion to daily meals. However, as usual, the purpose of my articles is to provide factual evidence of both the pros and cons of this distinguished beverage, so without further due, here is the latest scientific word..

Recently discovered component of grapes is thought to be responsible for the French Paradox and the longevity factor of the South Western regions of France, and the natives of the beautiful Sardinia is called Resveratrol. This phenolic compound is a potent antioxidant which can mimic the effect of calorie restriction - a well known mechanism for improving multitude of factors responsible for good health and longevity. Most potent form of Resveratrol is extracted from the skin of the grapes. However not all the skin created equal. It appears that only the red wine grape varieties predominantly Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are most potent in this department, and particularly from the Bordeaux, Burgundy, South Western parts of France and Sardinia. There is some promising results coming from few of the local vineyards. Pinot Noir grown in Oregon and Hudson Valley NY may have similar qualities, though more research is on the way to prove it's potency. However, it is important to keep in mind that wine is a beverage containing enough alcohol that can do damage to your liver when consumed in large quantities. People suffering from cardiovascular diseases or liver disorders should limit or discontinue consumption of alcoholic beverages and seek other ways of obtaining this valuable ingredient all together.
